Ohio Women’s Coalition
Ohio Women’s Coalition is a membership-based, non-partisan alliance aimed to improve and support economic standing for all women in Ohio through advocacy, support, resources, and education. Through a collaborative effort, Ohio University students Harlee Shae (lead designer) and Briele Dudgeon (supporting designer) conducted a complete rebrand of the Ohio Women’s Coalition. This rebrand intended to improve client reach and participation through a cohesive, powerful brand identity, adaptable for all promotional touch-points, from merchandise to social media.
Task
The challenge at hand was to create a brand identity that felt empowered, modern, and sociable, while not seeming overly feminine or maternal. This was accomplished through multiple client meetings, professional peer reviews, and extensive research on brand psychology.
The largest challenge faced towards the beginning of this this rebrand was creating branding for women and about women without feeling overly feminine or maternal. This was important to us and to our client, because women come from all walks of life, and inclusion is at the heart of Ohio Women’s Coalition’s mission. With their mission in mind, we took on the challenge of creating modern, bold, and empowering branding that is satisfying to the eye and engaging for both current and potential new members.
Luckily for us, our client wanted a full rebrand. So, we started first by understanding Ohio Women’s Coalition’s wants and needs, meeting with them bi-weekly to conceptualize potential brand routes, and understanding how their mission could be displayed through their brand identity. We were then able to begin creating each piece that goes into a successful brand guide.
Our client knew exactly what they wanted from the very beginning, meaning we were able to pinpoint an elaborate idea of what we’d deliver from an early stage, meaning way less revisions for us later on. By the end of the process, we delivered Ohio Women’s Coalition with a fully new and intentional brand identity, including color palette, logo variations, social media assets, business cards, and more.

The final step is perhaps the most rewarding in the design process. Although we got to see the client fall in love with our design throughout the entire process, it was when the client saw their final deliverables that we were most rewarded. Receiving thanks and affirmation that we completed a task was not only affirming, but a testament to our skills as designers and as collaborators in an agency.
